JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News)MTN Ads has launched VideoSMS, hailed as a first-of-its-kind innovation in Africa.

This new technology enables the delivery of videos or images directly into a standard SMS inbox, poised to transform enterprise messaging in South Africa.

MTN Ads is the digital advertising arm of MTN.

Explaining the differences between existing SMS technologies, Jason Probert, General Manager of Digital Services at MTN SA, said, “While SMS, Rich Communication Services (RCS), and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), are all similar communications tools in the same space, Video SMS is a completely new messaging technology that enhances a standard SMS to include multimedia files.

MTN VideoSMS will allow businesses to send an SMS with up to 2Mb of video.

Businesses can also send graphics and animated gifs to enhance their messaging. This allows brands and businesses to provide content about their products, how-to guides and other content.

“Most importantly, it is available across all smartphone handsets and operating systems as video SMS’ are delivered directly into phones’ native SMS inbox,” Probert noted.

Probert expects video SMS to revolutionise direct marketing.

“We know marketers have been waiting to be able to deliver multimedia messages because the conversion rates are about 10x higher. MMS hasn’t really worked as a technology, and RCS remains on the horizon, but VideoSMS is here now.”
