JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – MAURITIUS Telecom is accelerating its technological evolution with the rollout of 5G Advanced (5G-A), making the island nation one of Africa’s earliest adopters of the next-generation network.
This strategic upgrade underscores the operator’s ambition to strengthen digital infrastructure and drive economic transformation.
The journey began in 2024 when the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) allocated spectrum that enabled Mauritius Telecom to commercially launch its 5G network nationwide.
That deployment delivered faster mobile broadband, improved reliability, and laid the groundwork for more advanced services for consumers and enterprises.
In July 2025, the company demonstrated 5G-A in Port Louis, showcasing its ability to deliver ultra-high speeds, minimal latency, and expanded capacity for millions of connected devices.
These capabilities are expected to fuel innovation across industries such as finance, healthcare, manufacturing, and tourism—critical drivers of the Mauritian economy.
Industry players have taken note. Technology partners highlighted that Mauritius Telecom is among Africa’s first operators to transition to 5G-A.
Global ICT leader Huawei, speaking at the Mobile World Congress earlier this year, emphasised the importance of integrating AI with 5G-A, enabling networks to become more intelligent and adaptive for advanced applications and services.
Mauritius Telecom’s rapid move from 5G to 5G-A reflects a focused investment in cutting-edge connectivity.
By aligning technical innovation with AI-driven ambitions, the operator aims to establish Mauritius as a regional digital hub and a model for telecommunications development across Africa.
