Windows 10 deadline looms: Businesses urged to upgrade

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – WITH Microsoft officially ending support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025, businesses are being urged to shift their focus from planning to implementation of Windows 11 upgrades.

Experts warn that delaying migration could expose organisations to higher costs, security risks, and operational disruptions.

Windows 11, designed for the hybrid workplace, introduces AI-powered productivity tools through Copilot for Microsoft 365, alongside advanced security features such as secure boot, hardware-based isolation, and TPM 2.0 support.

However, these enhancements require modern hardware with greater processing power and longer battery life—capabilities many older PCs lack.

Remaining on Windows 10 past its end-of-life date carries significant risks.

Microsoft will end updates, hotfixes, and support services, leaving systems vulnerable to malware and ransomware.

Additionally, Microsoft 365 licenses running on unsupported devices will no longer be covered, and new features or applications may fail to function.

While Extended Security Updates (ESU) will be available, they come at a steep and increasing cost over three years.

To ensure a smooth transition, technology specialists recommend five key steps:

1. Evaluate device readiness** using Microsoft tools to identify which PCs can upgrade and which require replacement.

2. Plan upgrades strategically, prioritising devices critical to business operations.

3. Secure and back up data via OneDrive, SharePoint, or on-premises solutions.

4. Test essential applications** on Windows 11 to avoid workflow disruptions.

5. Train employees** on new features such as Snap Layouts, integrated Teams chat, and enhanced accessibility tools.

Migrating early allows organisations to spread costs, avoid last-minute procurement challenges, and fully harness Windows 11’s benefits. According to Axiz, a leading IT distributor in Southern Africa, pairing new Windows 11 Pro devices with enterprise-ready solutions from Dell, HP, and Lenovo offers long-term security, efficiency, and productivity gains.
