Avon has intensified its efforts to tackle the dual scourges of GBV and breast cancer impacting women in South Africa. The announcement comes as Women’s Month, observed locally in August, draws to a close.

At the heart of Avon’s Women’s Month activities was a commemorative event aimed at empowering women to embrace their financial and purposeful power. “We remain deeply concerned about the relentless issue of gender-based violence. It’s for this reason that we plan to step up efforts to boost the financial independence of women. We believe that by including women in the mainstream economy, we can make a significant dent in GBV, particularly as many women find themselves trapped in toxic situations due to financial constraints,” said Nadia Mohamed, Avon Justine’s Head of Commercial Marketing.

“The sheer scale of GBV, along with the silent pandemic of breast cancer, galvanises our commitment to use all available resources to create a better world for women,” Mohamed added. The company plans to continue its close collaboration with non-governmental organisations in the GBV and breast cancer sectors. The aim is to discover more innovative and impactful ways to address these challenges.

Avon enjoys a longstanding, productive partnership with these organisations, who are at the forefront of fighting these issues and offering support to those affected. “The exceptional work these organisations are doing validates our partnership and makes us optimistic about the integrity of our brand values, which centre on advancing progress for women,” remarked Mohamed.

To kick off its Women’s Month celebrations, Avon engaged in a series of activities with like-minded stakeholders across various platforms. These activities were aimed at evaluating the progress made in fighting breast cancer, gender-based violence, and in promoting women’s economic independence. One such event was the University of Stellenbosch business breakfast session, hosted by the institution’s Small Business Academy.

Kgothatso “KG” Montjane, Avon Justine ambassador and world tennis champion, was among the special guests at the Women’s Month commemorative event.
