Spotting AI writing

AI-Generated content has become the norm everywhere, it’s near impossible to escape, and that might not be a bad thing. So long as your organisation has a guiding hand, without it the content becomes very generic. In that vein how do we identify AI writing? Let’s take a look at this dummy article by ChatGPT and note what to look out for to spot the obvious AI generation.

The prompt: “Generate a 500-word article about why black and white photos are better than colour photos.”

The article:

“In today’s world, where vibrant and saturated colors dominate our visual experiences, there is a unique and captivating charm to black and white photography. While color photography captures the essence of life in vivid detail, black and white photos possess an enduring appeal that surpasses the limitations of color. In this article, we will explore why black and white photos often have a timeless quality and evoke a depth of emotion and artistic expression that is unparalleled by their colorful counterparts.

  1. Emphasizing Composition and Form

When colors are absent from a photograph, the focus shifts to the composition, form, and texture of the subject. Black and white images enable photographers to highlight the lines, shapes, and patterns that create a sense of visual harmony. By removing the distractions caused by vibrant hues, black and white photography allows the viewer to appreciate the inherent beauty of the subject itself.

  1. Conveying Mood and Atmosphere

Black and white photography possesses a unique ability to convey mood and atmosphere in a profound way. The absence of color allows the viewer to engage more deeply with the emotions evoked by the image. The interplay of light and shadow in black and white photos creates a captivating contrast that enhances the overall mood and evokes a sense of nostalgia, timelessness, or even melancholy. The monochromatic palette enables photographers to communicate a particular mood with subtlety and elegance.

  1. Enhancing Visual Storytelling

In black and white photography, the absence of color encourages the viewer to focus on the narrative and storytelling elements of the image. By removing the distraction of color, the photographer can emphasize the subject’s gestures, expressions, and interactions, capturing the essence of a moment in a more impactful way. Black and white photos have a remarkable ability to engage the viewer’s imagination, allowing them to fill in the gaps and interpret the story behind the image.

  1. Amplifying Textures and Details

Without the influence of color, black and white photography highlights textures and details in a way that is often overlooked in color images. The interplay of light and shadow accentuates the intricate details and surface textures of the subject, creating a visually captivating experience. Whether it’s the weathered facade of an old building, the delicate lines of a portrait, or the intricate patterns of nature, black and white photography elevates these elements, inviting viewers to appreciate the intricate beauty of the world around us.

  1. Timelessness and Classic Appeal

Black and white photography has an enduring appeal that transcends trends and fads. It carries a sense of timelessness that connects us to the rich history of photography itself. While color photos may be a reflection of the present moment, black and white images have a classic quality that evokes a sense of nostalgia and can resonate with viewers across generations. By choosing black and white, photographers can create images that withstand the test of time and continue to inspire and captivate audiences for years to come.

Black and white photography holds a special place in the realm of visual storytelling. By stripping away color, these images emphasize composition, convey mood and atmosphere, enhance visual storytelling, amplify textures and details, and evoke a timeless and classic appeal. While color photography has its own merits and vibrancy, black and white photography offers a unique artistic language that engages the viewer on a deeper emotional and aesthetic level. So, next time you’re framing a moment through your lens, consider the power of black and white photography to capture the essence of a scene and leave a lasting impression on those who view your images.”

The first thing to look for if you are from outside of the USA is spelling, ChatGPT by standard uses US English, thus words will have Z’s whereas in UK English we would use S’s. Of course, this can also just be an American author so it isn’t the be-and-end all of spotting AI content generation, but it is something to be mindful of if you are generating content for your own company.

The first major tell that I get before I look closely at all is the desire that ChatGPT has to wrap up and conclude articles very definitively, often with a “Conclusion” title as above or the last paragraph will start with the phrase “in conclusion.” Beyond this ChatGPT is unable to form opinions or express things emotively, you’ll find that whenever you generate a piece via AI or read one it will often be emotionless and flat. It reads more like a research piece, and this is because all the AI is able to do is rehash what already exists. This further leads AI to sound repetitive, rehashing key phrases. Not above how every point will read “black and white …” there is no variety in how the phrase black and white is presented nor in how the comparisons are made.

If you read back on the piece again now you’ll find yourself noticing a lot more obvious AI characteristics that you can take into other pieces you read. If you are writing a piece for your company there are some easy ways to make a piece your own. Take whatever you have generated and create variety in language and expression, add opinion and emotion and if you aren’t in America don’t forget to us UK English.
